STUART BOWDITCH

Interpreting sounds of objects, people, places & activities.

Stuart’s work is inspired by location and the people, experiences and objects he encounters there.

He is particularly interested in sounds that are associated with place, overlooked and overheard noises of the everyday and highlighting the auditory as a defining factor in how we experience a particular environment.

His recordings of people, their activities, experiences and environs have contributed to art installations, phone apps, archival records, dance performances, public consultation events, musical compositions, a computer game, a eulogy and sound tracks to short films.

Biography:

Instead of going to university Stuart played drums in a Death Metal band and trained as a forklift truck driver. His interest in rhythms and sound led him to electronic and experimental music, where he began to sample objects and make beats.
Field recording followed and with his explorations in sound processing he found himself making site specific installations, soundtracks to short films and recording the memoirs of terminally ill people.
More recently he took part in a six-month long Public Art project in Rochester, has given performances using sound generated by Jon Kipps' sculptures and is currently recording the sounds of Essex for a year-long project with Essex Record Office.
